Cartographic tools for sustainable management of urban mobility (MobiTools)

This project is a natural continuation from the Prueba de Concepto 2020 proposal MOVACTES (Territorios para la movilidad activa en España. Desarrollo del Atlas MOVACT 1.0) funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (PDC2021-120820-I00). The MOVACTES project was a first step towards creating an applied tool to summarize complex environmental information that configures active mobility. That project took our idea from a research stage of development 1 to a research stage of development 3, allowing us to test the environmental coverage of the key core-components and allowing us to calculate a first version of a the Potencial Territorial para la Movilidad Activa (PTMA) index and a first prototype version of a feasible map viewer to gain access to the trove of collected cartographic information and elaborated indexes.

In this continuation project MOBITOOLS we aim at bringing our product from a research of development 3-4 to a research development 6. By doing so we aim at expanding the scope of our atlas and contents available through the map viewer in order to include elements that have been found key to understanding micromobility use. Thanks to the work led by the group within the I+D 2019 funded project MICROMOV (Eléctricos, ligeros y compartidos. La micromovilidad en España y sus implicaciones ambientales, sociales y de salud. Un enfoque multi-método con GIS, tracking y acelerometría; PID2019-104344RB-100) we have been able to gain new understanding on the environmental features that are need in order to foster safe and efficient micromobility use within Spanish cities. These key insights are now going to be incorporated to the whole MOVACT rationale, in a new version of the atlas (MOVACT2.0) that will be deeper, with more computational speed, and with updated and better-suited core-components. In parallel the present MobiTools project will continue in the path of transferring of knowledge from the TLR3 to TLR6, bringing the proof of concept a step closer to fully demonstration in an operational environment. In the funded months, this project sets to put in use the validated set of indexes and advance the public version of the map viewer prototype that can act as an interface between the user and the huge database that we have available. Because of that, a significant part of the project efforts will be invested in creating the backend development that makes it possible for the map viewer to run live and provide the necessary service, at the same time, that we will also focus on the frontend design and exploring the commercial-related potential aspects of the product.

Our project provides two key functionalities: guarantees access to scientifically validated composite data on the built environment, and  it does so in a comprehensible, standardized, and comparable manner that can help overcome information overload and help decision-making. Other specific services will be offered, such as the maintenance of the platform (software maintenance, upgrade of the functionalities available with the license agreement, launching new functionalities); scientific support (including new cities when indicators developed, new and upgraded indicators, maintenance of databases); and technical support (basic training, personal help support).
